Making Partnerships Work

Background:

This is a pilot course developed by PtP at the request of the Hampshire LSP Practitioners network.  After discussions at a unitary practitioners network meeting the programme is now being rolled out in Berkshire and may be offered in other sub-regions subject to interest.

Quotes from delegates on the Hampshire pilot include:

“Making partnerships work is a chance to stop and think about what is important not what is urgent” – Vince Johnston Performance and Development officer Eastleigh District Council”

“I’ve been working with partnerships for over 30 years… and this (Making Partnerships Work) has been extremely helpful for me.” - Anthony Climpson OBE New Forest Tourism Destination Manager

Target Audience:

  • LSP practitioners / managers

  • LSP support officers

  • Other members of staff / managers with a specific interest in partnership working.

  • Other officers proposed by LSP practitioners.

Outcomes:

At the end of the programme participants will

  • Have a better understanding of how to use ‘partnership drivers’ to engage and motivate partners

  • Have enhanced their influencing and networking skills.

  • Have gained an insight into the scope and range of the role of a Partnership Support Officer, and the techniques used by successful officers to drive partnerships forward

  • Have clarity on how the LSP, and other local partnerships, ought to link to the SCS and LAA.

  • Have developed tangible ideas to help individual LSPs work, and help them collaborate with neighbouring LSPs on issues of common interest.

  • Have gained a personal insight for participants into their personality preferences and how to enhance their impact and effectiveness.

  • Considered how best to make use of PtP bespoke funding in the sub-region.

Sharing learning:

This programme is based on a pilot initially run in Hampshire and now being rolled out in Berkshire.  PtP hopes the programme will help share learning and develop expertise across the south east.  Other sub-regions have expressed interest in the programme.

Commitment:

Although the course is free, there will be a cancellation charge should a delegate drop out without finding a replacement or for non attendance.  This will be levied at £600.  We have found the charge secures the commitment of participants to an otherwise free event. Any monies collected in this way will be returned to the PtP budget to run the course elsewhere.

Costs:

The course will be funded with PtP funds pooled by a sub-region.  The only cost to participants will be transport costs.

Confirming a place:

Places will be issued on a combination of first come first served and representation from across the county. This is likely to mean one or two representatives from each local authority. To register your interest simply follow this link. Please do not restrict the number of names you put forward as we will repeat the course if there is sufficient demand later in the year.

Outline Programme:

This programme will blend theory and practice and also balance the focus between the organisation/partnership and personal insight and development. There will be a mix of tutor input, group discussions, guest speaker input and 1:1 confidential feedback discussions.

Workshop 1

  • Introductions and scene-setting

  • Facilitated discussion about ‘partnership working’

  • Input from a guest speaker – a Practitioner Associate (topic to be agreed)

  • Stakeholder Analysis and Management – to include engagement and empowerment

  • Formation of Action Learning Sets

  • Introduction to the Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ) and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

Between Workshop 1 and 2 participants will complete the OPQ on-line and the MBTI questionnaire.

1:1 feedback sessions will be held between workshops 2 and 3.  Participants will have two sessions of approximately 2-hours. These feedback sessions have been identified as key elements contributing to the success of similar programmes.
