Participatory Budgeting

Synopsis:

This module will explore what participatory budgeting (PB) is and how it fits with the partnership and community engagement and cohesion agendas. It will explore links with Local Area Agreements and spending the Area Based Grant (ABG). Participants will discuss the different approaches to PB used in the UK and abroad, its potential benefits, how it relates to representative democracy and the role of Members.

Objectives:

By the end of the module, participants will have:

Increased their understanding of the major principles and history of PB
Considered how PB fits with the new local services policy agenda
Discussed different pilot approaches used to date in the UK
Explored how PB might fit into their own engagement strategy
Developed a realistic action plan for introducing PB into their local area
